FUNCTIONS OF various divisions of the IDCE

DISTANCE Learning DIVISION

The Distance Learning Division is in charge of off-campus distance learning. This is aimed at making the programmes of the Polytechnic available to prospective students who may be too far away and/or for some other reasons are unable to commute regularly to the Polytechnic campus for lectures.

Parallel programmes division

The Parallel Programmes Division offers programmes at the tertiary level to prospective students who can only attend lectures on the Polytechnic campus at evenings and weekends.

Professional programmes division

This Division prepares students and professionals for Certified International Examinations. The courses include

  • Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA)
  • Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICA)
  • London Institute of Marketing (LCM)
  • Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS)
  • Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)

The Division also coordinates Professional Short Courses from various Departments of the Polytechnic during vacations.

Non-tertiary programmes division

The Non-Tertiary Programmes Division is in charge of all the non-tertiary Diploma, Technician and other programmes that are organised on campus.

Activities

Contract/agreement document was developed in consultation with the Legal Unit. Agreements were signed in the 2012/13 academic year with some staff of the Kumasi Polytechnic to prepare Distance Learning Modules in Accountancy to enable the smooth take-off of Distance Learning Courses in Accountancy.

COLLABORATIONS

The Professional Programmes Division corroborated with the Business Development Unit to organise short courses for professionals and the general public towards the end of the 2011/12 academic year.

STAFF RECRUITMENT

  • Mr. Alfred A. Sarbah was appointed Coordinator for Short Courses in the Professional Programmes Division in 2012
  • Mr Francis Onuman was appointed Senior Lecturer in the IDCE in 2013

INFRASTRUCTURE

The activities of IDCE were for a considerable period conducted through the office of the Non-Tertiary Programmes Division, a subsidiary of the IDCE which had just enough extra space for the Administrative Assistants of the IDCE. The IDCE has now been moved into its offices in the new Multiplex Building (MP Block) since the beginning of the year 2013.

FUTURE PLANS

At the moment only a few of the normal Polytechnic programmes are also being run outside the normal periods. The IDCE plans to get more programmes to also run parallel outside the normal periods in consultations with various departments. In addition to the use of Learning Modules for Distance Learning Programmes the IDCE also plans to make use of the Polytechnic Internet facilities to make the services of the Polytechnic available online to those who have access to and are capable of using the Internet at their own time, place and convenience.
