K-Poly, Chinese company to assemble computers, mobile phones at Kuntenase

K-Poly to Assemble Computers

The Kumasi Polytechnic has signed a joint venture agreement with SongTech Company Limited of China which will pave the way for the two partners to set up an US$11 million plant to assemble electrical and electronic equipment. Under the agreement, K-Poly and SongTech are to set up the K-PST Electronics Company Limited, an entity that will oversee the assembly of the K-PST brand of laptops, desktop computers, mobile phones and television sets for the Ghanaian and West African markets.

Further to the agreement, SongTech is to build the assembly plant at the Polytechnic’s 300 acre entrepreneurship village at Kuntenase in the Bosomtwi District of the Ashanti Region within the next four months. The plant will initially have four production lines to assemble laptop and desktop computers, mobile phones and television sets. The plant, when fully operational, will also offer avenues for practical training to students of the Polytechnic while providing permanent employment to residents of Kuntenase and its environs at the same time.

The Rector of K-Poly, Professor Nicholas N.N. Nsowah-Nuamah signed for the polytechnic while Mr. Fang Yi Xu, CEO of SongTech Company Limited signed for his company. In brief remarks, Proferssor Nsowah-Nuamah said the Polytechnic was entering into a partnership that will change the image of Kumasi Polytechnic in terms of innovation. “This partnership, when successful, will enable us stand on our feet, as we will be able to generate the necessary funds to enable us mount a wide range of academic programmes, undertake serious scientific research and be highly competitive,” the rector said. Professor Nsowah-Nuamah noted that students of the Polytechnic would, for the first time, have firsthand knowledge and hands on practical training in electronics at the assembly plant when it is operational. “We must admit that training at the Polytechnic has been largely theoretical with very little practical training and this partnership is going to change that trend,” he said.

“It will bring composite benefit to everyone in the polytechnic as students, lecturers, departments and faculties will be involved in the running of the entrepreneurship village,” Professor Nsowah-Nuamah added.
The rector said SonTech stands to reap huge returns on their investment in the partnership but urged them to uphold the laws of Ghana at all times.
He thanked the management and the Polytechnic Council for giving the necessary approval, paving the way for the partnership to become a reality.
Mr. Lei Ping, a Managing Director of SongTech in his remarks noted that Chinese technology is on the ascendency and stressed the desire of the Chinese people to share their success story with Ghana.
He said, “American model is gone, China model is coming up. This China success we want to share with K-Poly.”
According to Mr Ping, SongTech will, under the joint partnership with K-Poly, invest heavily in modern management practices and in the latest technology.
He expressed confidence in the partnership and hoped the collaboration would be mutually beneficial to all involved.
Mr. Ping assured that the company was moving to the site right away and would ensure that within four months, the plant will be up and running at Kuntenase. “All the necessary machinery and component parts have been ordered and will arrive from China soon,” he assured.
