Electrical Electronic Engineering

ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

The Electrical/Electronic Engineering Department was established on the 15th day of May 1954.The institution was then known as Kumasi Technical School.  It later became known as Kumasi Polytechnic. It gained accreditation to run the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in Electrical and Electronic engineering in 1992.  The duration for the higher national diploma (HND) programme is three (3) academic years or six (6) semesters. The Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is aimed at training Technician Engineers with sound practical and theoretical background to take up the middle-level supervisory position in the electrical and electronic engineering industry. These technician engineers will also be adequately prepared with competency based programmes i,e the requisite skills to set up their own small and medium scale industries.

2.       GENERAL AIM OF THE DEPARTMENT

The objective of the department is to turn out highly skilled Higher National Diploma holders now – Bachelor of Technology (B’Tech) degree holders in future - with very sound theoretical and  practical background.

As part of the departments aim to solidify the competency based training          concept with emphasis on acquisition of practical/professional skills, the    Electrical/Electronic Engineering Department, based on the memorandum of         understanding (MOU) signed between Kumasi Polytechnic and Deng Solar Engineering Training Centre, the electrical/electronic engineering department         will soon begin training in the application of solar technology.  This programme will run as an optional/elective course.  Two members of staff   of the department have already received training organised by Deng Solar Engineering Training Centre.

Furthermore- The electrical and electronic engineering department in        conjunction with Tom Kobayashi computers have trained students and    staff to assemble computers.These computers are being used by the various departments of Kumasi polytechnic.

3.       PROGRAMMES

          Two types of programmes are running in the      department           namely;

          i)       Higher National Diploma, ie HND I, II & III.

                   This is a full-time programme of three years duration.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->ii)       <!--[endif]-->Electrical Engineering Technician.  This is also a three year course certificated yearly at each level.  It is categorised into three parts.  Part one is being run on part-time basis. Part-three is however being run on full-time basis but still being classified as a non-tertiary programme.  On successful completion of the three parts, the candidates apply for the Full Technological Certificate (FTC) issued by the Technical Examination Unit of Ghana Education Service in Accra after passing the interview.

The department hopes to run the Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech) programme in the near future when there is an improvement in the staffing/resource situation.  The major setback is the inability of the department to recruit and retain permanent or full-time teaching/lecturing staff.
